March is National Nutrition Month!

National Nutrition Month®, created by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, is a nutrition education and information campaign celebrated annually in March. The campaign focuses attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits.

This year’s National Nutrition Month® theme is “Get Your Plate in Shape.” The theme of “Get Your Plate in Shape” reinforces the key messages of MyPlate, the USDA’s replacement for the food pyramid. This icon supports the dietary recommendations from the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans to fill half your plate with fruits and vegetables and serves as a less complex visual reminder for Americans to make healthier food choices.

Here's What We Have planned for the month:

Snack attack tables

The Snack Attack tables are a great way to celebrate Nutrition Month in the middle and high school cafeterias by highlighting the benefits of healthy snacking as a way to eat more of the MyPlate foods students often do not get enough of- fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low fat dairy. Students will have the opportunity to learn how to unleash the power of healthy snacks, sample some healthy snack foods, and enter a raffle for a chance to win a prize.

Fruit and vegetable challenge

During a one week contest period during the month of March, classrooms will compete against each other to consume the highest number of fruit and vegetable servings at school lunchtime. For each serving of fruit or vegetable a student selects with their lunch meal, they will receive a sticker, and stickers earned will be placed on a poster for their classroom that will allow students to track their progress and for you to easily identify winning classrooms.

Simply Good

This year’s new Simply Good program consists of five individual campaigns throughout the school year to build excitement in the cafeteria for elementary, middle and high school students throughout the school year. These exciting events will educate your elementary, middle or high school student(s) about the importance of eating healthful and balanced meals.

Individual campaigns planned throughout the school year:

Simply Good Fresh & Local – September / October

Simply Good Food – November / December

Simply Good Meals – January / February

Simply Good Nutrition – March

Simply Good Flexitarian – April / May
