President Obama Signs School Nutrition Legislation into Law:
On December 13, 2010, President Obama signed the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act into law. The legislation will improve the quality of school breakfasts, lunches and other foods sold in schools while also strengthening nutrition programs that serve young children, including WIC and the Child and Adult Care Food Program.
The law will increase federal funding for school lunches by about 6 cents per child and allow the Secretary of Agriculture to set standards for foods sold in schools. It will also help combat childhood hunger by making more than 100,000 children on Medicaid eligible for free lunch and allowing 20 million additional after-school meals to be served annually in all 50 states.

On Tuesday, February 9th, 2010, First Lady Michelle Obama launched “Let’s Move,” a nationwide campaign to end childhood obesity within the next generation. The campaign is taking a comprehensive approach, calling for support and resources from all sectors of society, including our nation’s schools. Mrs. Obama is encouraging schools across the country to participate in the HealthierUS School Challenge, a program developed by the United States Department of Agriculture recognizing communities that create healthier environments through the promotion of good nutrition, nutrition education and physical activity.
Wellness Policy The St. Louis Public Schools Wellness Policy was developed in accordance with the National School Lunch Program's Reauthorization Act. The act requires all public school districts produce a detailed policy that addresses the health and well-being of all students. Our Wellness Policy is being updated and will be posted soon.
